We’re delighted to announce that Footprint Digital has been named Business Training and Education of the Year 2026 by Business Awards UK.

This award recognises our long-standing commitment to developing the next generation of marketing talent through innovative training programmes, industry partnerships and the continued success of the Footprint Academy.

For us, this award is about far more than education. It is recognition of a philosophy that has shaped our agency for more than a decade: creating opportunities for people at the start of their careers, developing raw talent and providing a safe environment where future marketers can learn, experiment and grow.

Shooting the Highest Paid Person’s Opinion

At the centre of this achievement is our proprietary ‘Shoot the HiPPO’ syllabus, which underpins a comprehensive learning ecosystem that includes the Footprint Academy, internal onboarding programmes, online digital marketing courses and client training initiatives.

‘HiPPO’, or Highest Paid Person’s Opinion, refers to a common challenge in marketing where decisions are driven by hierarchy rather than evidence.

Our syllabus challenges this way of thinking by encouraging marketers to make decisions based on data, insight and measurable outcomes.

University Recognition for the Course

The syllabus was originally developed through our work with universities, particularly the University of Essex, where members of our team regularly delivered guest lectures.

Through these experiences, we repeatedly observed a gap between academic theory and the realities of working in a marketing agency.

Students often graduated with a strong understanding of marketing concepts but limited exposure to live client environments, commercial decision-making and data-led marketing strategies.

The ‘Shoot the HiPPO’ framework was designed to bridge that gap.

The Footprint Academy

Today, the syllabus forms the foundation of the Footprint Academy, our flagship training initiative.

Since launching in 2015 with just a single participant, the Academy has grown significantly and has now supported more than 157 aspiring and early-career marketers.

What makes the Academy distinctive is its focus on practical application.

Participants do not simply learn theory; they are immersed in real-world marketing challenges and introduced to the realities of agency life.

Throughout the programme, they work through live client scenarios, contribute to marketing strategies and present recommendations in professional environments.

For many attendees, it is their first experience of seeing how marketing theory translates into meaningful business outcomes.

Alongside this practical experience, participants develop expertise across the core disciplines that modern marketers need to succeed.

Training covers search engine optimisation, paid media, conversion rate optimisation, analytics and data interpretation, while also developing broader professional skills such as strategy development, project planning, communication and client management.

As a certified B Corp and member of 1% for the Planet, we also integrate digital sustainability principles into the programme, ensuring participants understand how marketing can create positive impact alongside commercial success.

The Academy Evolution

Over the years, the Academy has continued to evolve.

To make learning more accessible, we introduced a hybrid model that combines collaborative workshops with free access to our online learning platform.

This approach has enabled us to support a broader and more diverse range of participants while ensuring the programme remains flexible around university studies and other commitments.

In 2022, we expanded the Academy further by opening places to clients and professional marketers.

Since then, more than 25 marketers have completed the programme as part of their onboarding and professional development.

By extending the Academy beyond Footprint Digital, we have been able to help organisations build stronger in-house marketing capabilities while ensuring new recruits gain a solid grounding in practical, evidence-based marketing from the outset of their careers.

Supporting People’s Careers

One of the outcomes we are most proud of is the impact the Academy has had on people’s professional journeys.

Since the programme began, 23% of graduate participants have gone on to join Footprint Digital, creating a sustainable pipeline of talent for the agency.

Many others have progressed into successful careers across the industry, securing positions with leading brands, agencies and global organisations, including Google and Nestle.

The Academy’s influence extends well beyond recruitment.

Former participants have returned as guest speakers, mentors and industry advocates, helping to inspire future cohorts and share their experiences with those beginning their own careers.

While we are proud of those who have joined our team, we are equally proud of those who have gone on to succeed elsewhere. Our objective has never been solely to recruit talent; it has always been to contribute positively to the wider marketing industry by helping individuals build confidence, develop practical skills and gain valuable experience.

A Real Team Effort

The programme also plays an important role within our own organisation.

Every new member of the Footprint Digital team completes the Footprint Academy within their first year, ensuring a consistent foundation of marketing knowledge across the agency. This helps us maintain high standards, encourages continuous learning and creates a shared understanding of best practice across all departments.

This award reflects the efforts of the entire Footprint Digital team.

The Academy and ‘Shoot the HiPPO’ syllabus are embedded throughout the business and supported by colleagues across Client Services, Delivery, Sales, Marketing and Operations.

The programme is led by our Head of People, Charlotte, whose dedication has helped ensure the Academy remains structured, scalable and impactful as it continues to grow.

We are also incredibly grateful for the support of our university partners, including lecturers and careers teams at the University of Essex, the University of Greenwich and King’s College London, who continue to recommend the programme to their students and help us connect education with industry.

As the marketing landscape continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace, the importance of practical, industry-led training has never been greater.

Emerging technologies, changing consumer behaviours and the growing influence of AI mean that marketers need more than theoretical knowledge to succeed.

They need the confidence and experience to apply that knowledge in real-world situations.

The Motivation to Continue

Winning Business Training and Education of the Year 2026 is a fantastic milestone for Footprint Digital, but it is also motivation to continue investing in the next generation of marketing talent.

We remain committed to helping aspiring marketers gain the skills, experience and opportunities they need to thrive, while supporting organisations in developing stronger, more capable marketing teams.

We would like to thank Business Awards UK for this recognition, our university partners for their continued collaboration, our clients for supporting the programme and every Academy participant who has been part of the journey so far.

We’re incredibly proud of what the Footprint Academy has achieved over the past decade, and we’re excited to see what the future holds!
